At Ysgol Llandrillo-Yn-Rhos we strive to ensure that any pupil within the school who requires resources or support additional to those which are usually provided within a school will be catered for, adhering to the aims and objectives suggested in the Code of Practice on Special Educational Needs and also the guidelines issued by the L.E.A.
We have a Nurture Co-ordinator, Sandra Mellors, to oversee the care given to pupils with emotional, social and behavioural issues.
The school runs nurture sessions, offers one-to-one support to
children experiencing difficulties in the classroom and also organises
social skills groups.
Children who may require additional learning support are identified through a series of measures including classroom observation. They are referred to our Additional Needs Co-ordinator, (ALNCO), registered at the appropriate level of support and an individual education plan is prepared.
From the earliest stages, parents are consulted and actively encouraged to participate.
Special needs provision may take the form of individual advice to the child, parents, staff and classroom assistant.
Full potential
Alternatively children may work in small groups either within the
classroom environment or in other learning areas around the school. They
may take part in one-to-one catch-up sessions.
Some children have sessions with intervention staff overseen by our ALNCO. These sessions help with the education of our children and also ensure that they reach their full potential.
Where appropriate, we may seek advice from agencies such as the speech and language support service (SALT), occupational therapists, physiotherapists and educational psychologists.
Our school allows access for children with physical
disabilities. There is a lift and disabled toilet facilities on the
Junior site.
As a school we cater for our more able pupils primarily within the classroom, by offering tasks that will extend their thinking. We also take pupils to our feeder high school, Eirias High, to join Year 7 pupils for extra tuition in a variety of subjects.
We have also formed partnerships with other schools within and outside the county, to form more able and talented groups working on specific aspects of the curriculum e.g. reasoning skills, extended writing and art.
